Mango Ice Candy

We’re smack dab in the middle of summer here in Manila and the heat is unbearable, ugh. If only I could live inside the fridge, but obviously I cant thus I decided that it was the absolutely best time to make ice candies! Yey!

I’m not sure if they have this in other parts of the world but here in the Philippines, ice candies are definitely a welcome reprieve to the summer heat. It’s basically an icy treat made from fresh fruits, sugar and milk or from whatever flavor you can think of. My personal favorite flavor is Mango ‘cause admit it, Philippine Mangoes are the best in the world!

Here’s how you make them:
You will need:
·         1 kilo of Mangoes
·         1 big can of condensed milk
·         Mango juice (optional)
·         Water
·         Sugar (optional)
·         Funnel
·         Ice Candy plastic bags

How to make:
  •  Wash the mangoes and separate the meat from the pits. (note: I like mine chunky but if you want to have a smoother texture you can puree the meat in the blender)
  • Mix in your condensed milk, mango juice and water.
  • Taste the mixture. (note: It has to be really sweet as you have to take into consideration that when you freeze them, the sweetness is lessened.) Add sugar if desired.
  • Using your funnel, pour the mixture into the ice candy plastic bags leaving two to three inches free.
  • Tightly knot the top of the plastic bag to ensure that the mixture is secured in the plastic bag.
  • Freeze for about 3-4 hours until mixture is set.
  • Enjoy!
I’ve read somewhere that commercialized ice candies are mixed with cornstarch and water to maintain the creamy texture we all know and love.  I was too lazy to do this but maybe you guys might want to try that. Afterwards, let me know how it panned out! :)
Happy Eating!
